Positioned as a three-sided peninsula within a dynamic salt pond environment, this Rhode Island coastal retreat underwent a comprehensive landscape reclamation associated with a significant cottage expansion. HMWhite’s design reorganized the site into a sequence of distinct outdoor rooms—each integrated and responsive to the property’s native ecology and its dynamic coastal forces.

Disturbed site areas were restored through a resilient matrix of salt-tolerant native shrubs, meadow grasses, and pollinator perennials, sensitively reinforcing fragile marine edges and exceeding environmental permitting requirements. This ecologically driven planting strategy established a legible spatial framework that structured the four- acre property into a cohesive setting for both daily living and seasonal gatherings.

Subtle topographic sculpting and the strategic placement of mature native trees introduced scale, spatial hierarchy, and rooted the expanded architecture within its surrounding landscape. A consistent design languag —defined by high-performing, regionally adapted plant communities—unifies perennial borders, transitional wetland meadows, and stone and lawn terraces.

Viewed from multiple levels and perspectives, the landscape fuses ecological performance with compositional clarity. Its layered biodiversity embraces the site’s 270- degree waterfront exposure, transforming the property into an immersive and enduring coastal sanctuary.
