As part of an invited design competition for Dubai’s planned new satellite city, HMWhite developed conceptual urban landscape designs for three of its primary arterial roadways. Bold landforms were used to integrate Arabian desert and wadi landscape typologies as a spatial and operative infrastructure. The vehicular scaled transit corridors were re-imagined to humanize and transform the users’ experience. Roadway assemblages and background utility buildings were buried within a contiguous a topographic landscape system. Native and indigenous large scaled plant communities were employed throughout the re-engineered roadways to establish a distinct landscape identity. Generous swaths of large shade-producing trees with bio-diverse desert grasses and forbs under plantings establish a memorable and visually cohesive landscape context. A new urban form emerges where buildings, public space and landscape are seamlessly bound, transforming the livability of the urban experience.
