Location: Long Island City, New York

Building for the districts light industrial heritage and burgeoning new commercial and residential developments, One & Three Gotham’s 5th Floor Podium Terrace is an unexpected surprise within the Long Island City neighborhood. A café pavilion and central gathering space serve as the center piece of the terrace design promoting community building, flexible interactions between building tenants and hosting of outdoor theater, events, music and dance nights. The terrace is intended to be fun, joyful and inviting while integrating sustainable design solutions and contextual site elements while establishing a biophilic transformation of the office environment and daily employee experience.

The terrace is comprise of an undulating and freeform urban meadow landscape that reveals a network of smaller gathering spaces for both solitary and group activities. The nooks and fringe spaces can host a diverse range of programming and can be freely transformed be users overtime and for special events. The terrace landscape is conceived as a successional woodland and meadow punctuated with copses of Poplar, shade and flowing trees. Drifts of native adaptive grasses, perennials and flowing bulb ebb and flow through the terrace providing a dynamic landscape framework and highlighting a vegetated horizon line against the terrace’s urban backdrop.
