Soho Haven

Location: New York, New York

Formerly an artists’ co-op, HMWhite designed this rooftop terrace as a private retreat and entertaining space for the owners of this penthouse loft. Built on top of a system of structural steel beams and grates, sunken fiberglass planters were custom designed and invisibly suspended between the beams to create a true sense of false ground. Framing and softening the architectural stair bulkhead, large Magnolias and Birches also reduce solar heat gain throughout the summer.

Gently mounded understory planting of Hydrangea, Roses, Primrose, Dianthus, and Lavender along with irregular bluestone pavers provide a modern interpretation on traditional English garden design. Adjacent to a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen, a culinary garden featuring vegetables, herbs, and strawberries provides fresh to service the owner’s passion for the culinary arts. A dining terrace defined by a contemporary garden pergola is positioned next to the kitchen and offers multiple entertaining venue options. Groves of bore resistant Whitespire Birches emerge from the pavement diversify the garden’s light qualities and buffer views of neighboring buildings. A practical faux-turf lawn with an abutting a vine covered trellis screen frames an outdoor TV which in aggregate provides an ideal family recreation and relaxation destination.
