JACX Plaza

Location:

Queens, New York

Conceived as both a “path” and a “node,” existing barriers and access points revealed specific direct routes’ moving through the space. As an effective and inviting neighborhood connector and social activating destination, overcoming the overbearing train trestle’s physical and sensory presence was paramount. Large, planted zones were conceived to attenuate the trestle’s sound and spatial dominance. Towering groves of Metasequoia trees and their seasonal vibrant under plantings are of a scale and density which erases the adjoining dark streetscape beneath the trestle. With an inward focus, the distinctly contrasting row of ‘Autumn Gold’ Ginkgo trees serve as trail markers to orient and direct movement. Soon the gardenesque crushed stone fine and granite sett surfaces will host moveable colorful tables and chairs for both public and private dining. Visual qualities of surface treatments, dappled shade, the planting’s seasonal blooming and textural performance, evening lighting ambience, and generous custom seating have been composed to draw visitors to congregate and inspire positive interaction. A community haven emerges as public perceptions shift and begin to view this public space transformation as a safe and memorable outdoor living room.
