Mixed-use Residential Building
New York, New York

Emerging from the third floor of the Related Company’s new 60-story complex near Times Square, HM White Site Architects has designed a pair of unique outdoor garden terraces hovering over the bustling city streets. The terraces link building interior amenity spaces with a series of outdoor garden rooms configured for variety of uses by the residents of more than 800 rental and condominium apartments.

The North and South Terraces integrate with the roof structure of a new theater to visually soften the base of the central tower and support a self-sustaining landscape interlinked with building storm water systems. Rain water is collected from building roof surfaces, stored in a large cistern within the building and recycled as irrigation for terrace plantings. Drought tolerant plant selections and varied green roof profiles further highlight water conservation while solar-reflective pavements and certified hardwoods expand the ecological sensitivity of the terrace designs.
