July 2008
As part of an urban study to improve shared public spaces and the transportation network that binds four Bronx institutions – the New York Botanical Garden, the Bronx Zoo, Fordham University, and the Montifiore Medical Center – HM White prepared a district street tree plantings plan. This plan cited over 3,000 new trees that will frame and line the project area streets as well as infill those with inconsistent plantings. This greening effort was executed and coordinated with NYC’s Department of Parks and Recreation’s (DPR) Million Trees program. HM White established the planting design vision for the district and a phased implementation strategy that reflects the Institutes’ priorities, DPR’s program budget, and tree availabilities. The District Tree Plan will add considerable vegetative cover to the Bronx neighborhoods and further reinforce their perception and memory as a “park district.”
