Mohali

Chandigarh, India

With its comprehensive site public realm design, HM White has reconciled this planned multi-unit residential community’s access and servicing needs while working closely with the buildings’ architect, Studio u + a. HM White’s comprehensive landscape design is comprised of a variety of distinct, yet complimentary, landscape characters that have emerged through resolving the horticultural challenges and opportunities of Mohali, India’s unique climate. This Chandigarh region is situated between a humid tropical zone to its south and an arid zone to its north. The project challenge for this 8 acre site has been to create a densely vegetated public environment that will be welcoming, comforting and memorable to its residents and visitors, while constructed over a subterranean parking structure. Even as a manufactured site, HM White’s design approach has been to create a high performance landscape that will sustain its varying annual rainfall and temperature conditions.

The landscape open space design is made up of two distinct park “pods” or neighborhoods. Mixed Garden Borders and the community’s Garden Walls. Each landscape element and their supporting technologies work together to establish the following community benefits:

  • Fosters walkability, multi transportation options
  • Captures, cleans, circulates and conserves water
  • Cools air temperatures and reduces urban heat island
  • Creates habitats for wildlife
  • Reduces CO2 emissions as a "living roof"

The clarity of the character of each landscape element through the use of indigenous plant communities establishes a strong sense of place with which the residents will easily identify.
